Why karandi over the other winter fabrics

Karandi is defined by its slub — the deliberate irregular thickening in the yarn that gives the surface a soft grain instead of a flat finish. That texture is why an embroidered karandi suit reads as expensive even in plain colours, and why it holds thread work better than softer winter weaves.

Against the alternatives: dhanak is brushed and softer, so it feels warmer against the skin but falls close to the body and reads casual. Khaddar is coarser and the most robust in genuine cold. Karandi sits between them — warm enough for most of a Pakistani winter, with the structure to look considered at a wedding, in an office, or anywhere you would not wear something fleecy.

What to check before you buy

Buying unstitched online means you cannot handle the cloth, so judge it on what the listing tells you:

• Where the embroidery sits. Front-only work is far cheaper to produce than front, sleeves and dupatta — and photographs usually show the front.
• Whether the dupatta is embroidered or plain. Most of the price gap between two similar-looking karandi suits lives here.
• Shirt meterage. A karandi 3-piece typically runs about 2.9–3m shirt, 2.5m trouser and 2.4–2.5m dupatta. Winter fabrics are often cut shorter than lawn, so if you are tall or want a longer shirt, check this specifically.
