What viscose is

Viscose is made from processed cellulose — plant-derived, but manufactured rather than spun straight from a boll. That gives it a distinctive combination: the breathability of a natural fibre with the smooth surface and heavy drape usually associated with silk.

Against the fabrics you already know: it is heavier and smoother than lawn, less structured than linen, and cooler than dhanak or karandi. It hangs close to the body instead of standing away from it, which is why it reads as dressier than cotton at the same price.

When to wear it

Viscose carries a little warmth but is not a true winter fabric. The sweet spot is October to December and again in February — the shoulder months, and mild winters in Karachi and the south where khaddar would be far too much. Indoors and in air conditioning it works most of the year.

Caring for viscose — the one thing to know

Viscose loses strength when wet. This is a property of the fibre rather than a fault, and it dictates how you handle it: never wring it, and never hang it wet. A soaked viscose shirt on a hanger stretches at the shoulders and stays stretched.

Dry clean embroidered viscose, or hand wash very gently in cold water, press the water out between towels, and dry flat in shade. Low iron on the reverse. Treated properly it holds its drape for years; treated like cotton it will disappoint quickly.
